CFNEM executive director addresses Alpena Lions Club

Patrick Heraghty, recently-elected executive director of the Community Foundation for Northeast Michigan, was the speaker at last week’s meeting of the Alpena Lions Club. Program chair for the meeting was Bernie Lamp III.

Heraghty reported that CFNEM continues to manage ever-growing funds. They serve a nine-county region, and they serve the largest geographic region in Michigan. At present they manage $41 million in assets.

For most of the funds they care for, 5 percent of the fund is spent annually for charitable purposes. The typical annual fee charged for these services is 1.35 percent, although some funds are only charged 1 percent annually.

CFNEM meets all national standards, and it was one of the first in Michigan to do so. Heraghty noted that Michigan is very strong in the community foundation world.

Heraghty reviewed a number of the CFNEM fund operations for the Lions, including Giving Tuesday, Youth Advisory Council, Women’s Giving Circle, CFNEM staff and others. He concluded his presentation by reviewing the goals and success of a number of CFNEM’s donor-designated funds.

President Paulette Roznowski announced a new club project: the construction of a wheel-chair swing at Starlight Beach. She also reported that the Lions will conduct their annual American Red Cross Blood Drive at the First Presbyterian Church on July 12.

Ken Dully reported that the Lions would be manning the organ donor booth at Art on the Bay on July 15-16.
